Puppy Mills
You’ve heard about puppy mills—adult dogs living in cages so small that they cannot straighten their legs, forced to bear one litter of puppies after the next. Dogs as objects to be used and then discarded. Puppies as commodities. At Help The Animals, we hate puppy mills with every fiber of our being.
A few days ago, Help The Animals took in 27 dogs from a puppy mill that was closing in our region. The scene was heartbreaking. As the dogs arrived at our shelter, we started to realize the horrible conditions under which these animals were being forced to live. As we evaluated their medical needs, we discovered that veterinary care had likely never been provided to these dogs. Many of the dogs have heart problems, eye problems, skin issues, ear issues, joint problems and more. On top of all these problems, every one of the dogs has horrible dental issues caused from over breeding and poor diets. Many have only a few teeth remaining, others have abscessed teeth that will need to be extracted.
We are horrified at the thought that a person could allow animals to live in cramped, filthy conditions. We all have shed many tears and our hearts are broken when we think of the years that these adult animals have suffered. Even though we hate puppy mills now more than ever, we are committed to caring for these precious animals and giving them a second chance at a happy life.
These puppy mill dogs also have never been socialized and because they know nothing of human care and love, they are not yet ready to be adopted. All the dogs must be spayed or neutered, and nearly all require significant medical attention.
We need your help! The cost to treat and rehabilitate these dogs so that they can become adoptable will be $6000. Please do whatever you can to help these animals get a second chance.
