The Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota is one of the poorest areas of the country. Over 80% of the inhabitants are unemployed, and crushing poverty along with poor agricultural conditions has produced almost 3rd world conditions there. Many families do not even have basic commodities like food, shelter or water. The water they do get comes from local wells, and the quality of this water is ABYSMAL. This article describes the situation in more detail:

...and tapping into the city line is not an option, as the supply lines would be equally susceptible to the contamination from the soil. Therefore, the only option at this point is bottled water.

I represent the Oglala Youth Project: an independent organization working towards bettering the living conditions of the Lakota Indians of the Pine Ridge reservation. We are currently looking into finding a long term solution to the water situation. In the meantime, their only source of clean drinking water is bottled water donated from volunteers. While their generosity is very much appreciated, it's simply not enough. WE NEED YOUR HELP! Every dollar raised will go towards supplying bottled water to the families in need.

Their situation is dire, and every little bit helps. Please, give what you can :)
