I, with many others, volunteer at Portland Rescue Mission and Union Gospel Mission (Portland, OR). Each day, hundreds of homeless people, men, women and young people, come through these mission doors for food, a warm place to sleep (in the harshest of weather), counseling (which rehabilitates many back to being a working part of society), for encouragement and to find someone who cares for them in their times of heartbreaking difficulties and unfortunate circumstances. A very small gesture, a clean pair of socks, under garments, a clean shirt for a job interview, a toothbrush and some soap, are just a few things that are needed desperately on a daily basis. They could be your father, your mother, your sister, your brother, your wife or your husband. One man explained to me, as he shared why he was in the street, "You are one paycheck away from being where I am". From the woman (who's husband lost everything to drug addictions and now is on the street) to the young adult with a mental illness that doesn't understand society, to the woman who has to sell her body so she can eat. This, my friends, breaks my heart to see and to know that it goes on every day, in every state, in this wonderful country, It shouldn't be. PLEASE HELP!!
