For all of us living on Long Island we have all dealt with the aftermath of Super Storm Sandy in some way or another, some much more than others. My family and I were fortunate, we had to deal only with some inconvenience. Many others whom I have come in contact with were not so fortunate. Friends at work lost portions of their homes, cars and treasured memories that can not be replaced. We are all reminded daily of the devastation as we walk outside and see debris left behind on our sidewalks and streets. Eisenhower Park in East Meadow has been turned into a sort of mini city, with tents lining the road where workers from across the country have been living in an effort to help bring relief to Long Island. A similar scene exists in Cedar Creek Park where FEMA, The American Red Cross and many insurance companies have set up camp to help facilitate the process of allowing families to make insurance claims, grab a hot meal, a hot shower or do their laundry. But even with all of this, there is still so much more to do and to give.
Many of us have donated time, money or supplies already. I know I have, but I was inspired while out on a run in Cedar Creek Park to do more. On December 2, 2012, in an effort to raise money for those who have suffered from Super Storm Sandy, I have decided to set out to ride my bike from Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City located on the East River to the Lighthouse in Montauk. The ride will be approximately 130 miles, from one end of Long Island to the other. My goal is to raise $100 dollars for every mile. That works out to be 1 thousand $13 donations or $13000. All proceeds will go directly to the Red Cross. I believe that it can be done with the help of my friends, family and all of their friends also!
