Who are We?
Hi, I'm Lorna and this is my husband Matthew, we're owned by a cat that has frequently been described as 'the sweetest cat ever' by almost everyone who's ever met him.
We're both Gamers and self-confessed geeks who love technology, films, TV, spending time together and of course, our cats. (We have two as well as Cornelius)
His name is Cornelius, he's a three year old champagne Ginger (What I like to call blond) rescue cat. He loves, rolling on his belly and getting belly rubs, meowing indignantly when told off and putting both arms around your neck to cuddle you when you're sad.
Here's the thing I wish I didn't have to ask, we need your help to pay his medical bills.
Due to a recent spate of ill health, I've been forced to work from home making what little money I can, while Matt continues to work full time. We're already full on our line of credit due to my own medical issues and when Cornelius became ill we were given two choices, let our otherwise healthy 3 year old cat go, or do whatever we could to save him.
We took the second option, for us, it wasn't even a choice. I would do whatever it takes to save him, so that's what we did.
Medical Emergency
The problem started when we came home one night from visting a friend and while eating supper, Cornelius started to throw up. If you own cats, you know this is a relatively normal thing that happens occasionally, but when we went over to comfort him and clean it up we noticed there was blood in it.
Matt immediately ran to the kitchen to grab a tub and we put the bloody sick in it, while I checked on Cornelius and threw on my jacket and shoes.
We were worried, but he had been acting normally so we weren't yet in panic mode. Yet, when I checked his gums, they were super white and I immediately started to freak out.
The vets who live across from us were closed so we rushed him immediately to the DMV, the emergency vet clinic fifteen minutes away.
On the way there in the car I checked his fur by doing the pinch test and realised he was severely dehydrated. I was so terrified on the way there I kept shaking his cat carrier and calling his name. I was afraid that if he went to sleep I would lose him. If you've ever been in that situation you know how awful it is.
After several days and many tests which ruled out problems, it was found that he had air in his abdomen and also that stones he had in his bladder had become a problem, so they decided to do an exploratory laparotamy, hoping to find and remove the problem and the stones at the same time.
He had the surgery two days ago and they found a very small hole and a lot of white scar tissue which forced them to remove 30% of his stomach. He shouldn't have any future problems due to this, but will need to eat much smaller meals more frequently throughout his life.
Later examination of the scar tissue through a microscope found tiny metallic fragments so small they can't be seen by the naked eye. The vet says they could have come from anywhere, even being breathed in and he was just unlucky enough that it irritated him.
DMV Veterinary Centre and Treatment
He might be unlucky, but we're lucky. Both lucky and blessed, because the staff at the DMV fell in love with Cornelius and took such amazing care of him, going above and beyond their job and even applying for a special medical grant to save us $1,000 dollars on the cost of his medical bills. We got the grant and couldn't be more humbled, happy and teary eyed, but at the end of the day, it's a small drop in a large ocean of money that we need to come up with.
And that's why we're asking for help.
Every penny of this money will go towards paying off his medical bills at the DMV and helping them to continue to serve the animals of Montreal 24/7. DMV is where you go in an emergency, it's where you take your pet in the middle of the night when you're scared out of your wits. It's where they respond with compassion, caring and the medical attention that your pet needs. It's thanks to DMV that Cornelius is home with us for christmas and still here to enjoy it with us and that truly is an amazing present.
We will forever be grateful to them and anyone that finds it in their heart to fund anything towards this.
Cornelius means so much to us, we love him beyond words and we hope that by showing you a little bit of him and our lives, you'll fall in love with him too.
I find it really hard to ask for money without giving in return, so check out the perks offered as well and see if they interest you.
Please consider donating, any amount no matter how small would be greatly appreciated. Please share this on your social media accounts and try and get us exposure.
Thank you so much for reading this and for your time.
Lots of Love,
Lorna, Matt and Cornelius.
