One of the number one reasons kids drop out of high school is that they don't feel a connection to any adults at their school. To combat this my school has assigned every student to an Advisory, basically your family at school. My advisory is 12 sophomore boys, called the "G-Dubb" advisory after my alma mater, George Washington University. We support each other by setting individual and group goals, participating in school wide competitions, and just spending quality time and being there for each other every day.

My boys love G-Dubb. They do "the G-Dubb clap," yell "Awwww G-Dubb," and elect a man of GW each week who gets to wear a foam tri-corner colonial hat. They have chosen three G-Dubb values: respect, focus, and leadership. It has been really amazing to see them come together and support each other.

Some of the other advisories at Carver have gotten sweatshirts to show their pride. Many other colleges and universities have donated sweatshirts or advisors have purchased them themselves. GW has not responded to several requests I have submitted and I simply cannot afford to purchase them as a teacher who is still paying back student loans. My boys generally come from very low-income backgrounds and I would love to provide them with a sweatshirt to keep them warm (yes, it does get cold in New Orleans) and increase their GW pride!

This is where you come in. If enough people are willing to donate a couple of dollars, all my men of GW could have a warm sweatshirt that shows the pride they feel in being part of the G-Dubb advisory. I have already seen the incredible impact being a part of our group has had on my boys and I want to foster that sense of pride and belonging as much as I can. Anything you can contribute would be greatly appreciated.
