Ben Fraser hasn't added a story.
I would like to support some great people I worked with personally in the aftermath of Nepal’s recent tragedy. I was on my way from the Tibet border heading towards Kathmandu when the earthquake struck. Although our building collapsed partially, no-one immediately around me was injured. It took time for us to realise how fortunate we were. We managed to make it to Kathmandu the following day after walking out over landslides. Most of the villages we passed were completely destroyed and the risk of further landslip was constantly present. The stream of people walking into Kathmandu emphasised how frightened and dispossessed many people felt.
I always thought that a disaster zone would be the easiest place to make a difference. Spending two days trying to find some way I could help completely changed my opinion. Phoning up organisations, talking to the British and American Embassies, aimlessly trying to band with other volunteers made me despair. However, I finally ended up at the hospital and came across an amazing group of voluntary workers. The exhausted doctors and nurses are being supported by a small, inspiring group who are doing their utmost to provide care and comfort for patients and offer practical help in any way they are able. They welcomed an extra pair of hands as patients continued to flood in (they had barely slept in days). Mostly young, honest, Nepalese volunteers, who recognise that the government cannot help all the people in desperate need, they are digging in to their own pockets when food, water or other resources are needed. They have managed to make a dramatic difference at the main hospital in Kathmandu.
It is for this reason that I would like to ask you to support them and help them continue to have an impact: they use the donations they receive to go to other hospitals and give out resources to the worse affected areas. I have left them to return to the safety of West London but I know they are continuing to work tirelessly and selflessly to help others cope. The individuals are not affiliated with an organisation which is why I am personally fundraising and will send donations directly to my contacts. These will be used to buy shelter, food and medical supplies. If the generosity of people exceeds the need of my friends I will also look to support a charity called RedR who are specialised in long term humanitarian support following a disaster. They plan to be there when the media, and the rest of us, have moved on.
I know many of you may have already given to the relief effort but if not, and you wanted to know that your donation would have an immediate and highly valued impact, then anything you felt you could give would be enormously appreciated. This is especially true in light of the recent news that the government is looking to tax any major aid donations. Your money would have direct value without going through the corrupt bureaucracy.
The need
It is difficult to give any more insight into the despairing situation in Nepal beyond that which the media has provided. However, having spent time in the hospital and tent cities I can confirm the reports of desperation. Watching the rains hit the open air tent fields and people trying to protect their belongs from the water using their hands as shovels while the army stood by under shelter, it is difficult not to feel huge sympathy. With water-logged fields and open toilets the risk of diseases, especially a cholera outbreak was ever increasing. Trying to do a little to prevent an outbreak I bought bars of soap and handed them out to families with a Nepalese friend. This lead to a saddening conversation where my friend was asking one family whether they were washing their hands before eating, the mother responded “Well we need some food first before we can start washing our hands.” This is in the centre of Kathmandu where there are a lot of available resources; I can only imagine how bad the situation is in the more remote areas of Nepal. This is why we need your help to buy the supplies listed below and try to stem some further suffering.
