Mary's Matriculation Higher Secondary School is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing an education to the disadvantaged children of Tindivnam, India, and its surrounding villages. The school is not supported by the government, and yet, is still privy to its strict regulations, one of which requires that the school have at least 15 computers. The organization is barely able to scrape up enough funds to cover daily maintinence and to pay its staff, and so they must look to outside aid whenever they face a new project.

And so here I am. I am working as a volunteer at Mary's through June and July, and I know that I can do my part, so long as I have the support of my family and friends. These kids come from nothing. In the evenings the students take me out to their villages and I tour through their homes- homes with a packed dirt floor, one room, and two pillows for a family of five. And still they smile, and still they show up each day to the school in their freshly cleaned uniforms to pursue an education that is their only ticket to something more. I have never before witnessed students so disciplined and set on learning, who crowd ten people to a bench and yet master topics more difficult than anything I faced in my own education. These students bring everything they can to the table, but even that is not enough when the resources aren't there to properly preare them for the competitive future ahead of them.

What can we do?

The school presently has five computers (keep in mind that the school educated nearly 900 students). The ideal number for this project is twenty. If we can purchase twenty computers, then each class will be able to work, two students to a computer. Each computer is estimated at a cost of 30,000 rupees ($500). Recognizing that $7,500 is quite a sum, I set my goal at exactly half of that. Even half a lab will be an incredibly leap for Mary's.

These kids deserve a reward for their hardwork. Please consider donating to their cause. Even if it is ten dollars- even the smallest amounts add up to an effect.
