Megan Moon hasn't added a story.
Baxter is a barely-7-year-old, gawky, big-eared, soft-hearted, playful, healthy, very vocal Chinook mix who has been with me since he was only six weeks old... and who just so happens to have a cancerous growth on the inside of his left rear leg. It was discovered by chance just after Valentines Day. The biopsy performed by a specialist in Atlanta has returned a diagnosis of "intermediate-grade fibrosarcoma." We are optimistic that the cancer has not spread into his chest or other parts of his body. Meanwhile, the treatment that has the best chance of long-term success is amputation. This treatment is my opportunity to give him the long life he deserves. When he smiles, looks at you with his big ol' brown eyes, and focuses those satellite-dish ears at the sound of your voice, you can't help but fall in love! I need help to give Baxter the treatment he needs. I am a full-time college student with limited finances. I am a jewelry maker, so in addition to this Fundrazr site, I will be creating and selling pet-themed keychains to raise money for his procedures (link to be posted soon—come back and check it out, they're going to be totally cool!!). Any help you can give will mean the world to me and Baxter. He is my family and he's still got so much life left to live. Thank you, and you have our love just for considering a donation to our cause.
UPDATE:
Baxter's prognosis is very optimistic! His chest X-rays showed no evidence of cancer, so it is the consensus of all veterinarians and radiologists involved that the cancer is limited to his leg. Amputation is the treatment option with the best potential for full recovery, so that is our next step. This boy's been through a lot, and he's still got one more big struggle ahead, but our friends and family have given us so much strength through their emotional and financial support. Please, whatever help you can give, we're almost through this! Thank you for your positive energy, kind thoughts, and prayers!
FINAL UPDATE:
Baxter's procedure took place this past Tuesday, March 4. The surgery went well and I was able to bring him home mid-afternoon on the following day. Thanks to all of the financial support from our friends and family, I was able to give him the surgery he needed before the cancer had time to spread! He is making amazing progress. He can go down the stairs with ease, up the stairs (still working on that technique!), he can jump on the couch, he even jumped up onto the bed last night (both with a little boost from a thick dog bed)! His mood is improving each day as his confidence grows. He's getting a lot of snuggle time, couch time, nap time, and t-r-e-a-t-time. The site of the incision is healing very nicely and his staples will come out in a few more days. Thank you for following our story, and thank you for your help! Now my sweet boy will get to live to old age, and I will be thankful for every day that I get with him. We love you all!
