Adda Fleming-Vallevand hasn't added a story.
Nicole's family and friends are uniting to help raise funds for her cancer treatments and support her family during this difficult time.
As many of you know our beloved Nikki ‘s cancer returned and she continues her fight against this rare and aggressive disease.
Nicole’s battle with a rare form of cancer, small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma began in 2011. After chemo and radiation, her CT scans were clear for many months. During that time she had remained very fatigued and couldn’t shake it. Then in March 2013, her CT showed her lymph nodes were enlarged. The following month they had grown more. At that time they did a PET and many nodes lit up. A biopsy showed the cancer had metastasised to her lymph nodes. At that point, the diagnosis was Stage 4 high grade small cell neuroendocrine with a median timeline of 18 – 24 months to live... Incurable. This disease strikes one in 100,000 people. There are barely any studies done because of the rarity of the disease.
For those of you who know Nikki well, you are all aware of her huge caring and giving heart, kindness beyond compare, genuine true spirit, hardworking mind and hands; and who has always put the needs of her loved ones and others before herself. She is the most gracious and accepting of people and is a true legacy to our giving kind hearted parents, our sweetest mother Joyce and feisty, funny and strong willed father Sid, whom we think fondly of each and every day.
Our Guardian Angels have been working overtime, and during her
reprieve from this cancer, we were able to celebrate her “Fabulous
& 50” birthday party with so many her family and friends! What a
joyful time for us all...and of course Nikki cooked up a storm as
usual...even though everyone else was bringing food, she was
determined to share some of her special appys with us all!
That all said, Nikki is a true Warrior Women and is currently struggling to get stronger after these last rounds of chemo ravaged her body. She was hospitalized from the horrible effects it put her body through...and she had to stop chemo to build her immune system back up for the next rounds which (according to the oncologist), will be needed as soon as it shows back up on her CT scans which are every three months.
As you know, Nikki is one smart lady and as she is supported by and supports women, through an online forum group, who suffer with a similar type of this “Rare but There” cancer. She continues to research and share all of her options in hopes of finding a cure or at least... an ongoing remission.
Update
Nikki recently had a scan which showed “No evidence of progressive disease”, which we are cautiously pleased about as this gives her a bit of a reprieve. That said, this type of basic scan historically misses the microscopic cancer cells that may continue to live in her body. They won’t give her a PET as they say it won’t change how they treat her. They still say Stage 4, incurable. They say it’s just a matter of time.
This, of course, is taking its toll on them as a family. Along with the health concerns is the worry about the expenses of several alternative therapies, a highly regulated and restricted diet, nutritional supplements along with the help of a hired Cancer Coach and Naturopath. Additionally she is hoping to attend an Integrated Naturopathic Health and Wellness Clinic nearby in Fort Langley http://integratedhealthclinic.com . With the fatigue, appointments and treatments, Nikki has been unable to keep up with her work and is trying to wind things down so she can focus on getting as well as possible and hopefully finding and getting a cure.
How you can help...
Many of you want to help! Some of you have graciously offered to plan a fundraiser, which we truly appreciate! We understand how much time and planning such events take and since Nikki has so many friends and family who are spread out everywhere we thought we would begin our fundraising efforts using the speed and power of social media as so many others have.
Our goal is... to help with the alternative treatments and get her the treatments we are currently looking into to either extend her life or save it.
Being the investigator she is, Nikki is looking into an extensive treatment program at a local alternative clinic which will cost several thousands of dollars. Our biggest hope is a bone marrow stem cell retrieval and stem cell transplant. We have only found one place that treats neuroendocrine cancer this way as it is usually a treatment for people with leukemia. Nikka has recently been in touch with a few people who had this procedure and they are now cancer free 5 and 16 years later!! This clinic is in Atlanta, Georgia and we are currently looking into if her medical coverage will cover this.
HOPE FLOATS!
We have been shown the way through God’s good grace and Nikki says, “I believe I am healed”, but that’s not what they’re saying. She says she will not go down without a fight. We need to continue to seek help and treatments. There is hope, just not through chemo and radiation. She and her “Soul Sista’s call it...putting on their Warrior Panties”! How amazing!
We will keep you updated on the possibility of Nikki being a candidate for this stem cell transplant. If it is not covered through their Medical Plan and extended health, and if it is not available in Canada she will have to travel to Atlanta, Georgia in the States several times over the next year to have the procedure done http://www.bmtga.com . We will let you know our future fundraising goals as we move through this journey and with your continued love and support ...we will keep the faith and pray she will find the time and peace to embrace each day in a positive, peaceful and happy light…and find a cure not only for herself, but for the other warriors fighting this highly aggressive disease.
Love to you all and thank you in advance for your caring and support!
