Chelsea School hasn't added a story.
For over 37 years Chelsea School has been providing a life-changing opportunity for our students. Our annual scholarship fund, is an essential part of our ability to make a difference in the lives of all students who need Chelsea School’s program, regardless of their financial means. By participating in our Annual Scholarship Fundraiser, you will be changing the life of a student with a learning disability.
In her own words, class of 2006 graduate and recent Bringham Young University graduate, Jennifer Lougee, would like to share her experience at Chelsea School:
"My educational history is perhaps similar to many others
like myself. I am Dyslexic, and note that I say “am” and not that I
“have”. For you cannot “fix it” nor “get rid of it” for the simple —
but important fact — that it is a part of me and every other person
who is Dyslexic. There is nothing wrong with us; we just see and
view the world differently from others. Much like speaking a foreign
language, you cannot “fix it”, but one can learn to bridge the “gap”
between the two languages, Dyslexic and non-Dyslexic. This concept
can be a rather difficult one to grasp. For those who do grasp this
concept, they see the value of those who learn, see, think, and
speak differently.
Before I went to Chelsea, I was in public school. There I was told that I was stupid, unteachable, lazy, never going to graduate high school, and other such nasty things that a child should never be told. Sadly, I began to believe it. Luckily for me, however, I started attending Chelsea when I was 12, a decision that gave me a chance at life. Here, for the first time in my young life I felt safe and accepted. I was allowed to learn and grow instead of being limited and shut down. I was in a place where people understood my language and I could at last freely communicate. But most importantly to me, I was not only told but shown that I was smart.
The year I entered the Chelsea School was the most eye opening
experience of my life. I was finally able to push aside all those
echoes of other people telling me that I was stupid and worthless,
and allow myself to see that I was extremely bright and very
worthwhile. I was amazed what the right teachers, staff,
administration, and place could do for someone who had fallen as far
as I had in self-esteem, confidence, and education. For once, my
life was full of hope. I allowed myself to dream, to set goals, to
aspire to great things. With the help and education that I received
from Chelsea, I learned how I learn, communicate, think, and
succeed. Once I understood who I was and what my strengths and
weaknesses were/are, I felt limitless — I could do and be whatever I
wished. And what did I wish? I wished to do my best and achieve
those things that I was told I could never achieve. I achieved a 4.0
GPA after the first year I was at Chelsea, and kept that all
throughout junior high and high school. I graduated valedictorian of
my high school class in 2006. I then went on to Graduate in the top
ranks of my class from Brigham Young University with a BS in
Horticulture. I am currently planning on continuing my education by
getting a Doctorate in Plant Pathology.
My educational and life successes would not have been possible for me to even dream about, let alone achieve, without the Chelsea school. I know what it is like to fight for the right to have an education — I have fought that fight most of my life — but it does not have to be that way; not when there are schools like Chelsea where their goal is to empower all their students with knowledge. If our society were utopic, then schools like Chelsea would be funded by the State, but unfortunately that movement has not yet happened. Until it does, scholarships are the only chance that some students have to be able to have the right to a proper education. I am eternally thankful that I was able to attend Chelsea and receive an education."
