Anyone who works in rescue will tell you that they wish their wallets were as big as their hearts. This is especially true for those of us who devote our time to trying to save the lives of pets who find themselves in kill shelters like Altus. Sometimes, decisions are made in good faith that if we do the right thing, everything will somehow fall into place.
We cannot look into the eyes of those sweet, furry faces in need and turn them away because the money just isn't there.
Unfortunately, this has led to debts being accumulated on our behalf. While we keep hoping to get ahead at some point, there always seems to be another emergency that arises that we cannot ignore. A dog that comes into the shelter with injuries or severe illness.
We also have dogs in boarding that have been there for a year or more. While we continue to place these dogs, it's taking longer than we had hoped and every day in boarding adds to the bill. It seems as if they get overlooked because they are "safe". While it's true that they aren't in immediate danger, it simply isn't fair for them to wait this long for a family. Not to mention that every day they remain in boarding adds to our bill. As a result, we no longer pull dogs without a firm rescue commitment.
We currently have outstanding balances with five different veterinary offices and boarding facilities. Thankfully, these places have been willing to work with us on paying down these balances. They know our hearts are in the right place, even if our wallets are slow to follow. We have made arrangements to get on a schedule to send minimum payments each month to each facility. These monthly payments total $500 when combined. We plan to begin making these payments March 1st, 2013. We MUST raise enough to make these payments if we are to continue saving lives. We've always tried to do right by the dogs and cats of Altus, but we must also try to do right by those who have helped us to make that happen. This amount will be on top of our regular costs that include vaccines and health certificates necessary for transport among other things. If you would prefer to send money directly to any of these five facilities rather than through our Fundrazr, that works, too! Please contact Sara Gomer for contact information so that those donations can be accurately recorded in our donor records for the year. If we happen to raise more than the required $500 for the month, any extra will be divided between the five facilities in addition to the minimum payment.
As always, we cannot express just how very grateful we are for each and every one of you who find it in your hearts to help these wonderful fur kids! Every dollar, every prayer, every share makes a difference.
