On March 25 of this year, Yennifer was racially profiled, entrapped (followed the order of a police officer who knew what he was telling her to do was illegal), called a “f**cking Puerto Rican” by an Orlando Police Department officer, arrested and taken to jail, and her car impounded all for a $1.25 supposedly unpaid toll and a suspended driver’s license from that same toll. It’s important to note that she has SunPass device in her car that is supposed to charge her account for the tolls, but apparently it was not working.
Since then, she has spent nearly $2500 to post bail, get her car out of impound, get her driver license back, hire a lawyer, pay tickets that she never received in the mail that lead to the suspended license, and fees to SunPass and E-pass. Yennifer was also fired from her job for not showing up the day she was arrested and has been unemployed from March 25 until she started a new job this past Thursday.
After getting out of jail, she found out that the Florida DMV, SunPass and E-pass had been sending citations to an old address (she changed her address with these agencies and had mail forwarded 6 months ago). Even though she has done what she was legally required to do and informed the Florida DMV, SunPass and E-pass that they have the wrong address, these agencies are absolving themselves of any wrong doing and continue to mail citations to her old address with nothing being forwarded to her current address.
This past week, Yennifer was notified by her lawyer that she received another citation, yet again with no notification in the mail. The only way the lawyer knew was by checking Orange County court records. Yennifer then went to the Orange County Courthouse to find out what this citation was for. She was informed that the citation was for another unpaid toll. This toll was $0.75 and the ticket is for $143.25. Yet again, no notification by SunPass, E-pass, or the courts. Yennifer also found out that she has tickets in Osceola County from E-pass totaling $500 that need to be paid by May 24, 2013 or her license gets suspended again. Again with no notification in the mail. She is also being being threatened with a possible 30 days in jail due to the second license suspension.
So friends, the reason I am telling you this is Yennifer desperately needs our help and I feel that if we collectively donate money to help her, we can keep Yennifer free and out of jail and able to drive to her new job.
Our goal is $1500. That includes fees to SunPass and E-pass that have to be paid, the traffic citations sent to the courts from SunPass and E-pass, and to make a dent in her legal fees. We are asking for a minimum donation of $25 and for those who can afford more, please donate more. We have until May 24, 2013 to raise the funds and get this settled, so please donate as soon as you can. Any money raised above our goal will be donated to People’s World – your source for working class news.
Thank you friends,
Josh Leclair
