Leanna Kemp hasn't added a story.
In November 2011 our friend Ben was diagnosed with Stage IV Melanoma. Ben's 'mission was remission' and he was a true fighter who faced every day with a positive attitude and unbelievable fortitude. Sadly this terrible disease took his life after only 4 short months.
As if that wasn’t enough; a few months earlier in August 2011, Alaina Parr, one of Ben’s very best friends daughters was also diagnosed with a brain tumor. The parents, Chris and Marie Parr were able to enjoy the first 6 weeks of Alaina's life like any other family, only to have their lives turned upside down with this diagnosis. Alaina in all of her 19 months has undergone brain surgery to remove the tumor, during which she developed Desmoplastic Infantile Ganglioglioma (seizures), as well as suffered from what we believe was a stroke. She has undergone steroid therapy, numerous other procedures, including two very intense rounds of chemo only to find out it wasn’t working. Alaina was sent home as incurable (at just 6 months of age) and placed on oral chemotherapy. Alaina has truly beat the odds so far and is currently on round 13 of this oral form of chemo where the tumor has shrunk in size and she continues to develop new abilities slowly but surely. Alaina still requires extensive physiotherapy and it is still unknown what Alaina will need in the future.
Ben shared a bond with Alaina. They were both battling brain cancer and looked to each other for inspiration... Ben wanted us all to support the Parrs too in their quest to help their daughter beat this rare form of cancer.
We have created the softball tournament as a way for Ben’s friends to come together and celebrate his life as well as to honor his wish of supporting Alaina and her fight to beat cancer. Ben was an avid softball player in both men’s leagues as well as mixed leagues. He had many friends and was well known for his fun loving stories, his positive attitude, amazing smile and infectious laugh. We want to honor Ben’s memory doing something he loved and in turn raising money to support the BC Cancer Society, BC Childrens hospital and the Parr family. Our goal is to raise $10,000! We know with your help and the help of Ben’s friends and family, we will no doubt reach our target.
In order for us to have a successful tournament we are looking for the following;
• Sponsors for the fields we need to run the tournament (We have rented 6 fields which are $180 a day per field)
• Items that can be used for a silent auction
• Cash donations to help us reach our goal
• Homerun derby sponsors ($150)
We will be registering the tournament at both BC Children’s hospital as well as the Cancer society to be able to provide tax receipts if needed. We are also willing to post any banners of any and all sponsors on the fences at the park in prominent viewing areas.
We would be most grateful if you could donate any of these items to help us ensure the success of our tournament. If you are interested please contact me, Leanna Kemp, at jlkemp@telus.net or 604-761-5919 if you can help in any way. We appreciate you taking the time to consider our request.
