One dead, several injured in Pompano multi-car crash
December 8, 2012|By Robert Nolin, Sun Sentinel
One person was killed in a rollover crash and several others were hospitalized Saturday morning when a driver ran a red light at the intersection of Sample and Powerline roads in Pompano Beach, the Broward Sheriff's Office said.
According to BSO spokesman Mike Jachles, Dunold Jean, 35, of Boca Raton, was driving a 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo southbound on Powerline Road when he approached the intersection of Sample Road around 7:55 a.m.
At the same time, Jachles said, Justin Matthew Crouse, 31, of Fort Lauderdale, was in a Honda CR-V traveling westbound on Sample into the intersection on a green light.
Jachles said Jean failed to stop at the signal and struck Crouse and three eastbound vehicles. The Honda rolled on its passenger side. Crouse, not wearing a seatbelt, was flung from the car and pinned underneath. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Jachles said.
Pompano Beach Fire Rescue and Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue responded. Another victim was extricated from a vehicle and several people were taken to Broward Health North hospital.
The eastbound lane of Sample was closed from Powerline to the 2300 block until shortly after noon. Charges could be pending after the investigation is complete, Jachles said. No other information was available.
