Why we need your help: Los Angeles is a diverse city - beautiful and harsh - where cement meets the sky, where worlds converge creating a fertile ground for the development of new music. We are excited to be presenting Winter’s Child, March 14-17, 2013 at Diavolo Dance Theater in Downtown Los Angeles. To move forward with Winter’s Child we need your help. We need to raise a minimum 12,000 dollars to mount this production. This number includes the cost of rehearsal space rental, performance space rental, equipment rental, scenic design elements, modest artist fees (that cover transportation and other show related personal expenses of the performers), costumes and properties. We are extremely thankful to be engaged with such a deeply talented and passionate community, and for the tremendous support of our friends, family, colleagues, and fellow artists.

Winter’s Child in fiscally sponsored by Fractured Atlas, making this opera a 501(c)3 production; please let us know if you would like your donation to be tax-deductible.

The Story: On the eve of her birthday fourteen-year-old Child is visited by the ghosts of her three older sisters, each of whom died before their fifteenth birthday. As Child struggles to make sense of these visits, she is forced to confront her family’s past, her hunger for her own future, and a bargain her Mama made long before her birth. Set in a Southern gothic landscape, Winter’s Child is a world of rough earth, quiet prayer, and a mother’s fight to change her daughter’s fate.

About the project: The original idea for Winter’s Child stemmed from director Julianne Just and international composer and sound artist Ellen Reid’s interest in creating a female hero’s journey that did not involve seduction or surrender, where Greek myth and southern lore intermix in a magical realist landscape. Winter’s Child was first work-shopped in May 2011. Since its genesis, Just and Reid have attracted the energy and attention of a larger group of collaborative
artists including conductor Christopher Rountree and the Wild Up Ensemble, Drama Desk Award winning actress Mary Lou Rosato, vocalist Kalean Ung, choreographer Natalie Metzger, writer Amanda Shank, and an exciting team of designers, including: Christopher Heilman, Angel Herrera, Dorothy Hover, Amanda Lee, Zach Moore, Liz Toonkel and Dallas Wexler.

Winter’s Child provides artistic opportunities for over thirty artists from various intersecting disciplines whose visions have expanded the scope of the storytelling to include a rich visual and gestural landscape relying heavily on environment and design. We are creating a piece that vigorously explores the boundaries of opera and at its thematic core lies the power of family, the fear of death and the experience of being left behind.

We greatly appreciate your support and hope you can join us for the show in March!
