Lydia Kunzler hasn't added a story.
The time has come to start over and start fresh with a new service
dog prospect. I haven't yet chosen a dog, but have put a deposit down
on a litter we hope will turn out to have a suitable prospect for me.
Only time will tell, my deposit will be refunded if none of the
puppies test to have the correct temperament and aptitude test, and
I'll start over.
But I'm going to need the help and support of my beloved friends
and poodle community. I've lost thousands of dollars on washing out
the last two dogs I tried to train for service work. One I was doing
the training myself with the guidance of an experienced service dog
trainer, the other I had in a board and train program with an
experienced trainer. Sadly neither of them made the cut. It's always
going to be a risk with a puppy.
I really wanted to find myself a young adult dog with a mature
temperament for many reasons, but I've decided to start over with a
puppy simply because I've been waiting for a litter like this to come
along for literally years. Finding larger poodles with ALL the proper
health testing isn't an easy task. The litter I am currently putting
my hopes on both parents are larger standards, and have larger
standards behind them. It's still a gamble, there's never a guarantee
on how large a puppy will mature to be. And if temperament testing
doesn't reveal a suitable service dog candidate among the 4 I will be
choosing between, then I start back at square one.
But I need help preparing to get this puppy the best possible
foundation and start. Due to my current health challenges, I'm doing
something I've never done before. I have to. I'm planning to have
the puppy immediately sent to either a program or a puppy raiser to
start basics and foundation work, and the puppy won't be coming home
to me until it's got a solid foundation already. But this isn't going
to come cheap. If I can find the right program and/or finances to
afford it, I may choose to leave the puppy in a program until fully
trained.
The estimated cost of all this is going to be between $9,500 and
$24,000 depending on what happens with my own health/abilities to do
some of the work myself, and how far I plan for them to take the dog.
$9,500 is the started price, with a solid foundation I would have to
build on for it to become a fully trained service dog. $24,000 would
be fully trained. I don't have this kind of money, my medical
expenses have been pretty high the last year, and finances are tight.
There will also be the expense of custom gear when the dog is at an
age she's ready to start mobility work, as well as other expenses
along the way. So I'm reaching out for help.
My independence and health have both greatly suffered since the
loss of my beloved partner and service dog, Sonakih, last October.
Without her help, there is alot I'm unable to do for myself, and
independence has been a real struggle. Getting out of the house and
getting the exercise I need has become nearly impossible, even simple
things like getting my socks and shoes off, or getting into my
wheelchair without falling have become much more difficult. I really
need the help of a properly trained service dog, and after TONS of
research, I've decided this is the best way to accomplish my goals.
I do loose about 10% of what gets donated through Fundrazr.
Donations can be made directly to avoid some of those fees by PayPal
