The Legacy School hasn't added a story.
The Legacy School is located in Narok County, Kenya, Africa which is the gateway to the world famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve. The school serves both day and boarding students from baby class (age 3) to class 8 (age 14).
A Maasai woman who has a passion for affordable and quality education established the school in 2004. She had experienced first-hand the demand for quality education as well as the inaccessibility of that same education. She sought to provide a solution for her community by establishing The Legacy School.
Mrs. Margaret Koileken, the founder of Legacy, has had a progressive career as a teacher in Narok County. She taught in several schools before being appointed as the Standard Officer in Early Childhood Development and Education in the county and continuing her education at the graduate level.
The greatest challenge for Legacy and its students is the lack of clean, running water. Without this water, the hygiene levels of the boarding students are significantly lower than those of other schools in the area. Water-borne diseases, such as Typhoid, are easily contractible, causing students to miss classes for long periods of time. With no access to running water on school grounds, staff members spend hours going to the nearest river to fetch water.
Even after the river water is brought to the school, Legacy is still lacking clean water, which is necessary to keep our students healthy.
Legacy is currently trying to move the school to another piece of land where we believe clean, running water is accessible underground. We plan to dig a borehole to retrieve this water. Even when Narok goes months without rain, the water can still be found in a large supply underground.
Not only would this borehole change the lives of all the children at Legacy and fight poverty, but the excess water will be given to the community, making a significant difference in the town of Narok as well. Local Maasai women are walking long distances to fetch water for their families and their livestock. This borehole would greatly impact the lives of these women, as it would save them from these long walks each day and alleviate the water shortage.
In order to take on this task, we need to raise a large sum of money. The goal is 150,000 KSH ($15,000 USD).
We want nothing more than for more children in the Maasai community and beyond to be able to attend The Legacy School and receive a quality education. We would be so thankful if you would join with us in raising the funds for this project. Every donation counts!
Summary:
The money will be used to hire an expert geologist who will be able to determine the best places to dig the borehole on the school grounds. The generator that will pump the water will be installed and the borehole will be completed. We will run a test to see how many gallons per hour we receive from the borehole. The water will be taken to Nairobi for a testing period. This will cost $15,000 USD.
