I want to witness to the light that shines in the darkness, the light that darkness cannot overcome.

Why?

I have two beautiful and intelligent daughters, amazing friends and a bevy of cuddly critters to fill my life, but... my two girls had recently moved, one to NYC and the other to San Francisco.  My job felt like a whirlwind of bureaucratic change on a dead end cul-de-sac and along with agism it had whittled at my confidence. In a moment of angst I whimpered to my eldest daugther about the bleak terrain before me.

Her empathetic response was, "This isn't the Mom I know.  My Mom never gave up and she always looked for the best in any problem.  You need a counselor."

Splashed with  cold water, I woke up.  "She's right, this isn't me."  My daughter had  reminded me, that I am person of faith!  And my faith is in the path revealed by  Jesus.  Historically, Jesus was a simple man and astute spiritual leader.  In my faith, Jesus is the face of God, a face of compassion and  justice.

With renewed determination, I set a a goal for my 60th birthday--"to pedal against despair"-- to keep on living, to have fun, and to make a difference, no matter how small. I'd always wanted to do a week long bike trip. So I set my sites on a week fall foliage ride through Vermont and invited my girls to join me.

My congregation at Oak Grove Presbyterian Church in Bethpage, TN is working with me to to raise money and bring hope where it seems hopeless: Sudan, where  women are being systematically raped as a weapon of war and where refugee camps offer no refuge from guerilla violence.  The people of Sudan face lives of despair without the light of God's compassion.  There is a donation link on the Oak Grove facebook page and all monies, save minimal paypal charges, will go our denomination's Disaster Assistance Office for self development in Sudan.

Please help us "celebrate" life and my birthday with  this endeavor.  Share with your face book friends, share your donations, and share your own stories of hope too.  Godspeed.
