Present Moment hasn't added a story.
Present Moment Theatre Lab 2014 is a unique participatory opportunity for thirty-two 14-18 year olds from East London schools to come together as a theatre ensemble this summer to perform The Tempest by WIlliam Shakespeare. Do take a look at our video featiuring young people's experiences from last year's pilot production of Midsummer Night's Dream,
We are delighted to have attracted funding from a range of sources including Arts Council England however we still need to raise a further £3,000 to reach our target. This represents approximately £100 per young person. This will help us to pay for all their travel during the project which will make participation accessible to those young people who might otherwise be excluded for financial reasons. We know that engagement in the arts enhances life experiences and raises aspirations.
This highly aspirational project will offer a unique experience in all professional aspects of staging a classical play. Rehearsals are supported and enhanced by master classes with voice and movement specialists. Our young perople will also be entered for the Arts Awards (Bronze).
The Tempest will be performed in the 8 East London schools from which the young actors are drawn and culminate with a Gala performance at the prestigious Royal Academy Of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in central London.
Over 2000 11-14 years olds will benefit from this opportunity, as audience members. Seeing their peers working at such a high level inspires audiences as well as increases their understanding of the text that is being performed.
Experiencing and participating in the magic and universality of Shakespeare offers an opportunity to inhabit a different world.
Any donation however small will be much appreciated! All contributors will have the option to be credited in our programme and on our website, www.present-moment.co.uk. Thank you.
‘Present Moment perform centuries’ old plays as if they were written yesterday. ’ Time Out
' Present Moment’s idea to co-produce Shakespeare plays with school students is a brilliant way to engage them in the work of our most famous and loved writer. The group’s fantastic track record of working with young people at the highest level proves you can have challenging theatre work that is also inclusive and exciting for all students. This approach fits in well with our aspirations for a world class education for all young Londoners, and giving them access to the cultural riches of the capital.' - Munira Mirza , Deputy Mayor, Education and Culture, Greater London Authority, 23 April 2013
