This is Geri. As most of you know, I am hearing impaired. I lost 50% of my total hearing after getting measles when I was 3 years old. It has always been difficult to navigate the hearing world. Not knowing when a phone is ringing, someone is knocking on a door or hearing a smoke/fire alarm. That was until I got Ike.

I first met Ike in September of 2008. He was short like me but full of life. He had been in training to be a Hearing Service dog for 2 months. He and I bonded almost immediately. Ruben and I took him into our house and prepared for months of training.

I learned to train Ike to train for 6 sounds: my alarm clock, the timer on the stove, someone knocking on out front door, my phone and to the sound of someone trying to break into the house and the fire alarm. He quickly learned the sounds although he really does not like the fire alarm.  Just recently he decided to respond to the sound of the waffle maker chime.

He is a great dog. He follows me wherever I go in the house. He is my constant companion. He also goes to work sometimes so he can alert me to sounds at work.

We noticed a few weeks ago that Ike was beginning to limp on his left leg. We checked him and noticed a growth. It feels kinda solid but squishy.

We took him to the vet. The vet said that we found this pretty quickly and it should be able to be removed. He thinks that it may be a Nerve Sheath Tumor. We don't know the prognosis until the Vet gets in the leg and takes out the tumor. Whether it is benign or malignant.

The estimate for the surgery is $675.00. Unfortunately, Ruben has been out of work for a while and this added expense would put us over the edge. We really need to get this surgery done soon to improve the outcome and eventual prognosis.

Can you help? Any amount is appreciated.
