Robert Buchanan. He is 57 years old and lives in Marion, NC. He is on a fixed income. On June 9, 2011 he was riding a moped when a pickup truck pulled out in front of him. He was airlifted to Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC. He was alert but could not feel his arms and legs. Two days later he was put in ICU and placed on a ventilator and in a medically induced coma "to let his lungs rest". Two days after that, the doctor told us he had a C3 C4 spinal cord injury and would never breathe, talk, or walk again. He suggested that our family take him off the ventilator but we did not. Five days later, he started tripping the ventilator by taking breaths on his own. He was weaned off the ventilator and had a tracheotomy. He had surgery on his neck to remove the broken bone and it was replaced with a cadaver bone. For weeks, he would mouth words to us and we would try to communicate with him the best we could. He could feel our touches and move his fingers and legs a little. On July 20, 2011, my birthday, he spoke with a mechanical voice box for the first time in over a month. He was in and out of ICU for a few weeks and then went to Carolina Rehab in Charlotte, NC for 2 months. He made great progress, but had to leave due to insurance issues. He has been in 2 other rehab centers since and can raise his right arm up to his head. He has awesome strength in his legs but can not hold his upper body up. He requires daily stretching exercises to keep his muscles from getting tightened up which makes it hard for him to move. Also, His wife has cancer and is very weak. They have been married 32 years. Its really hard for her to do his daily exercises with him. She works so hard to take care of him and does an awesome job, but it really consumes her and she is exhausted all the time. We are trying to raise money to help with medical bills, therapy, and caregiving
