NoNames for Justice hasn't added a story.
We are student organizers at the University of Vermont fighting for racial justice and equity for all marginalized peoples.
NoNames for Justice formed in September 2017 after lack of response to demands presented in April 2017 by a group of students of color. Our group encompasses student leaders from the Black Student Union, Womyn of Color Coalition, Asian Student Union, Alianza Latinx, Free 2 Be, and more. We are a multi-racial, multi-ethnic group including trans and queer folx and individuals from a variety of identities and backgrounds.
We have come to the table asking for change and more inclusive policies, we are speaking in response to the marks of supremacy in this institution that enable marginalization, violence, and silence.
These are our demands:
1. University-Wide Diversity and Inclusion Training
2. Increased Recruitment and Retention of Faculty of Color and LGBTQA Faculty
3. The Renovation of Diversity Courses
4. Appropriate Responses to Bias Incidents
5. Mandatory Fraternity and Sorority Life Training
6. Increased Funding for Diversity, Culture, and Religious Student Groups and the Identity Centers
7. Renaming of Bailey/Howe Library and Perkins Building
We have been been fighting for these demands in various forms over the course of the past year including petitions, meetings, forums, teach-ins, rallies, marches and have had much patience with this institution. University decision makers have continued to make false promises that are followed up with little-to-no action. They continue to retraumatize students of color and exploit their emotional and academic labor while they fail to make concrete, effective change.
Until each demand has been met with sincerity and genuineness, NoNames4Justice will continue advocating for justice by all means necessary.
As of the past month, tensions on our campus have escalated more than they have in 30 years. We have witnessed increased acts of explicit racism including a shooting threat, racist flyering, and vandalism. A staff member, John Mejia (they/them), went on hunger strike on February 20th in response and students rallied behind them, sparking a massive student movement.
We have created this page after many alumni and community members reaching out to us asking about how they can help when they can't be standing directly alongside us. As our actions have escalated to a point where we are spending hours outside in subfreezing temperatures, hours in negotiations, hours sitting-in and taking over our administrative building, we have increasingly been in need of financial support. We have additionally received threats from administrators of disciplinary and legal action against students if protests continue. Although we believe this to be a violation of our First Amendment rights and have no plans to face prosecution, we want to be prepared in the name of safety and responsibility.
Fundraised money will go towards food, water, printing, blankets, supplies for art-making including banners, t-shirts, paint, fabric, posters, markers, rope, etc., leadership development conferences, and any potential legal fees.
Thank you for all your support, love, and solidarity. Please share and encourage others to be a part of this movement. There is no doubt in our minds that these demands will be met with your support!
