In short: we're being sued by wealthy individuals who are harboring our runaway adopted teen with psychological issues. We spent six years of our lives, and huge expense, adopting two teens from a developing country, and dedicating our lives to ... More ...

We spent six years of our lives, and huge expense, adopting two teens from a government-run orphanage in a developing country, and dedicating our lives to their extensive psychological illnesses (which only manifested after they came home with us). They never really accepted us, due to their traumatic upbringing by criminal parents, and their subsequent distrust of all parental figures.

Once the boy turned 18, he left our home to live with some wealthy people he had met through the job he had procured in landscaping. A few months later, his sister (three months shy of 18 now) decided to run away and join him. The people they went with have never made any attempt to contact us, which means legally they are harboring a runaway minor.

We maintained contact with her through school and police authorities to ensure her safety, but she made it clear she wanted nothing from us and would run away if we forced her to come home. We thought it best to let go and asked that she text us daily so we could maintain some contact.

That was 8 months ago, and we tried to move on from our heartbreaking experience, and try to dig our way out of debt. Just as we've been able to recover, the people who harbored our runaway served us with a lawsuit, looking for child support and sole conservatorship, accusing us of abandonment.

We have already paid $1700 to retain a top lawyer in family law in Austin. As this is a very unusual case, we need an attorney who can handle dealing with this complex case.

Our only goal is to negotiate out of child support, as it would be financially crushing, and provide these harborers with joint conservatorship so they can take care of her affairs with the high school she attends. We expect this negotiation to work out, but even with a discounted attorney rate, this will easily soak up our retainer.

Thank you for any support you can offer. Our adoption was very difficult, and a number of people supported us when we were stuck in a foreign country without enough money to get home when the government there foisted a month stay in their country at the last minute. We hope that this difficult situation will be supported as well, so we can move on with our lives and put the entire heartbreaking experience behind us.
