Cormac chilling out.

ASD affects people in different ways - communication / language, sensory (how we feel, see, hear, smell, taste - can be overly or under sensitive), anxiety, the need for routines and consistency, repetitive behaviours, limited sense of danger.

As a coping mechanism when everyday life is too much to handle, people with ASD  may have meltdowns or become shutdown where they disconnect from others around them.

George helps Cormac in a number of ways. He is a physical anchor when out in public - Cormac could bolt and not realise the danger he is in on a road, for example. George is trained to stop when he feels any  pull on his jacket from the attachment lead that links the two together. George also keeps Cormac's attention when he walks beside him - another means to avoiding a bolt.

In situations where Cormac begins to shutdown, a meltdown is usually inevitable unless something can halt the shutdown. George is the only thing that seems to work. Cormac lies beside him or on him and buries his head in George's fur.

Cormac & George

George also helps Cormac with simple tasks like showering. The sensory overload Cormac experiences while showering is so great, Cormac screams uncontrollably from start to finish. When George is with him, he concentrates on the dog and the shower is more bearable.
