Help complete a grade school in the country of Zambia to support over 100 students, grades 1-8. I came to learn the needs of this school when I was a Peace Corps volunteer. Our goal is to raise $5,000 which will complete a current community initiated 2 room school house. These funds will not only allow the existing structure to have cemented walls and floors, it will pay for windows, doors and wood framed roofing. In addition, it will allow for teachers housing to be built on site. Teachers housing will allow for Government qualified and trained teachers to give students a better chance for receiving a good education.

Why is this school so important? Zambia, located in Sub Saharan Africa has one of the highest incidences of HIV infection. In most cases, lack of information and poverty are the leading reasons for such high HIV/AIDS numbers. Education and being able to learn in a safe environment are the best ways to combat this disease. This school is located in one of the poorest and remotest areas of Central Zambia. Currently, to attend school children have to walk in excess of 10miles. For many young children this feat is not possible and results in very low school attendance. Right now, voluntary teachers are conducting classes in the unfinished building. Still, many children are not able to attend school because of the financial hardships of their parents. Girls are seen as less important when it comes to education and if parents have to choose one child over another,  they often will send boys first. The outcome of the finished school is to see the Zambian Government provide paid teachers. This will lesson the burdened to parents resulting in higher attendance rates for all children, more especially girls. Higher attendance, reduced poverty, and a safe environment to learn as well as reduced rates of HIV infection due to increased awareness and education are why this cause is so important.
