African Youth Leadership Experience (AYLE) hasn't added a story.
"I firmly believe that unless Africans from all levels
of society recognize and embrace the challenge of leadership,
Africa will not move forward"
~
Wangari Maathai, The
Challenge for Africa
Why it matters:
We believe that many challenges that Africa faces arise from specific attitudes and behaviors of leadership that hinder sustainable change and development. While it is easier to cultivate alternative leadership attitudes and behaviors earlier during adolescence and young adulthood rather than later, leadership development programs for secondary school youth that are easily accessible and offer high impact training in emotional intelligence and social entrepreneurship in a multicultural context do not exist.
The African Youth Leadership Experience (AYLE):
That’s why we started AYLE in 2014. We received a $10,000 peace prize from the Davis Projects for Peace initiative to train 29 East-African youth in a pilot program (For more information check Link). Between 2014 and 2016, AYLE partnered with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and Partners for Youth Empowerment in a research project that comprised a comprehensive evaluation of our first camp, to determine the impact of AYLE and an adaptation the pilot program to make it culturally relevant (For more information check this link and this one).
This summer we want to bring the research results and our experience from 2014 back to East Africa and train 50-70 students aged between 15- 19, in Uganda. The selected students, who arrive in school teams of four from diverse social and economic backgrounds, will experience a 7-day intensive, hands-on and multicultural learning experience that increases their network and transforms leadership attitudes & behavior.
The camp participants, in turn, will positively influence their school and home communities through implementing their projects and acting as role models for their peers. AYLE will also offer a co-current training and materials for each school represented at the camp in which teachers will be trained to support student teams when they return to school after camp.
Who are we:
We are a team of three, Andrew and Jakob who met at UWC- USA (Class of 2012) and Francis, who are passionate about social, sustainable change, emotional intelligence and education. Andrew is Ugandan and a Ed.M. Candidate in Human Development and Psychology at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Jakob studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Witten/ Herdecke University in Germany. Francis grew up in Uganda and did a B.A. in political science and a minor in African studies at the College of Wooster, Ohio and founded the “Young Entrepreneurs Challenge” in Uganda.
Together, we coordinate a selected group of 20 camp facilitators
& adult staff to run the AYLE camp 2017. All staff members will
participate in a three-day professional development training prior
to camp. Half of this team will comprise highly skilled individuals
of African origin, and half will join from Europe, Asia and the
United States.
The money we are raising is to pay for the location of the camp and the transportation cost for the students to and from the camp. We believe that with your help we can truly make a lasting difference since students start their own projects in the communities after returning from camp.
