Shakespeare in Detroit hasn't added a story.
Shakespeare in Detroit (SiD) aims to enhance and support the literacy, cultural, educational and financial growth of Detroit through outreach and site-specific performances that consciously promote diversity, accessibility and tourism.
SiD pioneered the first Shakespeare in the park experience in the city in 2013 with Othello at Grand Circus Park.
Over the past three years, we have produced ticketed shows, donation-based productions and free in the park performances each summer.
Our summer park shows are the meat of the mission at SiD, which aims to create inclusive Shakespeare productions in a time when the city needs it the most. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Detroit was the most impoverished major city in America with 39.3 percent living below a poverty line of $24,008 for a family of four. This means, there are limited resources for the majority of Detroiters to patronize arts institutions and have cultural experiences if they are not free and accessible.
SiD’s summer productions are at no cost to its audience and on the city’s bus line for those who depend on public transportation.
We supplement the educational system in the city by offering Shakespeare to students, residents, city dwellers and others who may not otherwise have the opportunity to engage with the arts, classical literature and theatre, and we bring communities that don’t typically interact together.
This July 2016 we will perform The Merchant of Venice at New Center Park and we need community and corporate support to ensure our team of professional artists, designers and technicians receive competitive wages. Donations also help pay for materials to keep admission free at the park.
