Melissa Cohen hasn't added a story.
In July of this year our dog Hailey seemed to have neck pain. We
thought maybe she hurt herself. The pain got worse. She would cry and
we noticed muscle spasms in her neck. We took her to her vet and was
given pain meds and other medicine for her neck. She got worse day by
day. She was in constant pain and was losing ability to walk. She
would scream in pain whenever she moved her neck. We were referred to
Blue Pearl to see an Orthropedic for her pain. We still thought at the
time maybe it was a pinched nerve or something with her back. We
received different meds to see if it helped. It didn't at all. She was
still in constant pain and could no longer walk. She also had two
seizures. We brought her back to Blue Pearl and had a lot of tests
done. Her spinal tap showed she had over 1,000 white blood cells.
Normally a dog has 0. We were told we'd now have to see the
neurologist. At first they said she has meningitis, but then diagnosed
her with Granulomatous meningoencephalitis (GME). GME is an
inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that leads to
the formation of granuloma(s) - a ball-like collection of immune cells
formed when the immune system tries to wall off foreign substances -
which can be localized, diffused, or involving multiple locations,
such as the brain, spinal cord and surrounding membranes. It acts many
ways like a cancer. I honestly thought I was going to lose her. In
August she was prescribed prednisone and procarbazine. We were told
she needed blood work every other month to make sure the meds weren't
damaging her. In a week she was back to the old Hailey. You wouldn't
even know everything she had just been through. She even got that
spark back in her eyes. We were even able to lower her dosage of the
prednisone because it is not a drug a dog should be on long term
because it can affect her kidneys. Around Thanksgiving we started to
notice she had some pain again. We were told to up her dosage. She
still wasn't getting better. I brought her back to Blue Pearl and she
was prescribed Gabapentin for her pain and I was told to up her
prednisone. She still wasn't doing any better. She was in constant
pain. Whenever she got up she would scream in pain. Hearing her cry is
heartbreaking. We took her Blue Pearl again and were told to let the
prednisone kick in since we just upped her dosage. Sometimes it takes
time. Yesterday 12.03.14 she was losing ability to walk. Her back legs
started to give out. We brought her in again and she ended up staying
overnight. The only times we have ever been away from Hailey is when
I'd let my mom have her for the night. I wish I could just make her
all better. I wish I could take away all her pain, but I can't. We can
only hope the best for her. The reason I am starting this fundraising
page is because we have spent about $8,000 so far on Hailey. I don't
have a savings anymore. My mom has been helping us out, but I feel bad
because she doesn't have money like that to keep helping us. You don't
expect these things to happen. I would love to be able to get to
Boston to see Dr. Sisson. We have heard hes the best for treating this
disease. We would really appreciate any help possible. Every time we
go and get treatment, its hundreds to thousands of dollars. I don't
want to get to the point where I can't get her help because I don't
have the money. Please help us out. Thank you.
