When I was in grade nine, someone asked me the standard question: "What do you want to be when you grow up?" I wrote my answer down. " I want to be a United Church Minister." Rathar odd answer really. Most kids want to be a vet or a doctor or an astronaut, a rock star or a teacher. I wanted, then and now, to be a minister.

Over the years, my call to ministry has been heard at a whisper and at times a roar. My common response was, "Oh I really can't. I am busy with a young child. I am too old. My husband and I dont share a faith. I don't have an undergraduate degree. It's too expensive. I've missed the boat. It sailed without me."

And the incessant sound at the door continued: "Tap. tap. Tap." From time to time I would open it, take a look, and slam it back closed like the lid on a treasure box. I knew what the box held was precious but I did not feel I had the tools to open it.

"Tap. Tap. Tap. "Bang! Bang! Bang!" It is amazing how one can ignore a din or noise in one's life when that noise represents the truth, or change or a request to exhibit Faith, Courage and Love.

This past spring, I attended a Discernment retreat with the United Church of Canada. I met other people who had heard their own names being called to this United Church of ours. Some were young. Some were in their midlife such as myself. Some had financial resources. Others most certainly did not. But the most remarkable quality of this weekend was the Silence. No more knocking, banging or tapping. I had answered the call. I was walking through the door. It was wide open and nothing was in my way.

Now, I have been accepted into the Master of Divinity Degree Program at Vancouver School of Theology beginning this fall. I am moving forward through that open door. I am committed to becoming Reverand Ashdown by 2018 and I humbly ask that you walk with me.
