My 16 year old daughter, Kara, has been accepted to participate in the People to People Student Ambassador program which is an educational opportunity to explore Ireland, Wales, England and France during July 2014.  She will be there almost three weeks and has been "bouncing" around our house (and her life in general) since being notified!!!  The trip's total cost is approximately $7,000 which includes airfare, lodging, ground transportation, meals and all activities.

As a part of her travels she will be participating in educational and community service activities.  Here are some of what she will experience:  cutting "peat" to heat homes of senior citizens; spending time with an English family for three days to really expand her understanding of other cultures; visiting with a member of English parliament to see how other governments differ; experiencing the Louvre and all of it's beauty and history; achieving a personal growth goal of repelling down a 70 foot Castle wall (she's not a fan of heights); and walking on the Beach in Normandy to touch-base with the D-Day events which includes touring the U.S. cemetery located there. This is only a small snapshot of all she will experience during this amazing, once in a life time trip.

Many of you probably know that the past three months have been very difficult for my family, especially financially, since I had a stroke this past October, 2013 and have been unable to work until January 20, 2014.  Also, Ken's job was eliminated in December, 2013 adding further financial strain.  We are still hoping to be able to send Kara on this great opportunity.  She is saving all of her money from her job as well as doing various fund raising activities to reach her goal.  We are also reaching out to our family and friends to ask if they may be willing to help us by sponsoring her to help raise funds for her trip to Europe.

Some things Kara is looking forward to doing!

About People to People:

People to People is a creation of President Eisenhower.  He had a vision that the best step toward creating world peace is to create opportunities for shared experiences and mutual understanding between people of various cultures.  He once said, "I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments." Here are a couple of quotes from the People to People Website that best explain the goals of the program:

*** People to People Ambassador Programs' educational trips cause Ambassadors to look at the world, its people, and international events differently. It's a change that could mean the difference between being passed over by the ideal employer—or a future full of achievement.

*** With all this fun and excitement, students may not realize they're learning. But People to People Ambassador Programs proves its value as an education trip when Ambassadors grow in confidence, courage, and determination with each new achievement.

*** A passion for improving the future of our world is just one of the things that makes People to People Ambassador Programs one of the world’s premier education travel providers. It’s also why we build community service into each and every student program.

*** Ambassadors earn terrific insights into other cultures through these hands-on service projects, whether it’s cutting peat to keep Ireland’s elderly warm, replanting a forest in Fiji, sending care packages to U.S. soldiers, or sharing smiles and games at a special-education school in China. Our accredited travel-study school even ensures that students take home service-learning credit for their efforts.

*** Best of all, these life-changing experiences help develop young people as global citizens—confident, capable, and compassionate.
