What are we funding?

We need your help to provide a fully equipped Learning Centre at the Lowlands Community Garden, which is the first community garden on the island of St. Maarten and it’s the first in the SXM Community Gardens Network.  Your contribution to this campaign will enable us to construct and equip the Learning Centre within the existing 400 sq m greenhouse structure that also houses a commercial sized aquaponics production unit on site.

Why is this important?

The SXM Community Gardens Network is an exciting new initiative that will provide delicious, local, sustainably-grown produce to the communities of the Caribbean island of St. Maarten. Island residents are currently almost totally dependent upon imported food and a significant percentage of every Euro or Dollar spent on food leaves the island. The objective of the SXM Community Gardens Network is to increase food security for the people of St. Maarten by reducing dependence on imported food. In addition, the money spent on locally produced food remains within the local economy. The SXM Community Gardens Network will create employment and provide training in various disciplines including aquaponics, permaculture, edible landscaping, plant propagation, seed saving, aquaculture, renewable energy, water conservation, waste management and more.

Who are we?

The SXM Community Gardens Network is a project of the collaboration of two non-profit organizations, Light Workers SXM and the Conscious Agricultural Awakening Foundation (C.A.A.F.). Both organizations share similar aims and objectives relating to organic food production, training and community outreach. We are united in our vision of St. Maarten as a thriving, food secure, resilient community in which residents work together for the benefit of all.

Why Community Gardens?

All the evidence indicates that community gardens are effective in bringing communities together and connecting residents not only to their food production but also to each other. Well maintained community gardens may benefit neighbours by providing access to recreational facilities, fostering a sense of community, providing attractive scenery and views for nearby residents and visitors, replacing locations for undesirable behaviours, and improving both the environmental quality and the general quality of life in the neighbourhood. In this way, the community thrives and thriving communities are free from vandalism and crime.

What will the Learning Centre achieve?

We have chosen to use aquaponics as the production system in the Lowlands Community Garden and wish to share the skills and knowledge required to run an aquaponics system with the wider communtiy by providing a Learning Centre on site.  We will accommodate classes of up to 15 students who will be trained to build, install, manage and maintain their own aquaponics systems at home, for their community or commercially.  We will hold open days and accommodate school parties.  We will also run courses on seed starting, plant propogation, seed saving, food preservation and more subjects as required by our community.

Where will your money go?

We will use your contribution to purchase the materials to construct and fit out our learning center.  The work will be completed by our awesome volunteers.

Concrete floor: $1,000

Walls and roof: $2,000

Fixtures and fittings: $2,000
