CPD is an indigenous organization that has worked for nearly 20 years fighting for human rights in Guatemala in the face of severe discrimination, poverty, and lack of true democracy. Although they are a peaceful human rights group that primarily educates indigenous people –especially women and children – about their rights and cultural heritage, they have been recently labelled as 'terrorists' by a right-wing propaganda campaign linked to Guatemalan elites and foreign companies. This is largely because many communities that CPD works with have risen up to peacefully challenge the exploitation of their lands and pollution of the environment by Canadian mining companies. As a result, a once vibrant organization has lost its funding, been reduced from 25 to 2 members who are working for free to try and continue their struggle. There currently remain only enough funds for the group to operate for only two more weeks. After that time they will need to end the important work they have undertaken for nearly two decades - allowing the powers of corruption, dictatorship, and extremism to win a decisive battle against social justice and human rights. All the organization needs to continue its work for half a year is $6000. To help them survive the next month, I need to find $500. Otherwise the doors close before Christmas.
