In March 2012, I was diagnosed with an extremely rare tumor called a retro-cardiac paraganglioma. In plain English, I had a tumor the size of an apple attached to the back of my heart. Two major arteries were attached to it. In June 2012, I had open heart surgery to remove the tumor. The two arteries had to be repaired as well as a large chunk of the left atrium which was lost in the removal of the tumor. I have been back to the National Institutes of Health twice since then. The people there are the best in the world at treating this disease. They literally save my life. In English speaking medical journals, there have only been about 95 people who have had what I had, so that makes me a rare zebra indeed. I could really use your support to get back there again. I have to be followed up every 4-6 months for the rest of my life since recurrence of this cancer is a very real possibility and I am already overdue for my next checkup. I am scheduled to return to NIH in July and I could really use your emotional and financial support to get there. Please give what you can. Thank you!
