Norma G. Drake was born and raised in Naples, NY.  At 17, she quit high school to marry Lewis Drake, her current husband of 57 years.  Norma has always been prone to help others, and when her son was little, he once asked "Mommy, why do you give to other people when we have nothing to give?".  That is the foundation of Norma.

In 1978, Norma and her husband, Lewis, opened their home to individuals with disabilities.  This was soon after de-institutinalization had begun, and as usual - she did it with high standards of quality.  Their home in Ingleside was converted in order for "the ladies" (as they were called) to have their own kitchen, bedrooms, and independence.  She helped them to learn their community - and to become involved in their own life choices.  In the mid 1980's, Norma chose to close her private care home in order to go to nursing school.  Norma was considered an "elder" in her class, and in 1985, despite the odds - she finished top in her class.

Norma has since worked in a variety of settings - from hospitals, to private duty care, Veteran's care, assisted living, and in doctors offices.  In every situation, she demonstrated nothing but COMPASSION, INTEGRITY, and DIGNITY for those she supported.

Norma's family finds it only appropriate to honor her 75th Birthday by starting the Norma G. Drake Scholarship to support Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) in their pursuit of education and credentialing.  We can only hope that the recipients of this scholarship will provide support in the same way Norma has so effortlessly cared for others.

All funds raised will be donated to the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals (NADSP) Foundation to support the effort of DSP professional development.  You can learn more about the NADSP by going to their website www.nadsp.org   (This is a 501c3 organization...Charity Registration # 41-83-41).

We hope you all realize the importance of qualified DSPs, as in most every case, we will all rely on their care at some point in our lives.  We can only hope it will be provided the "Norma" way.

Thank you for your donation...we hope to see you at our Wine & Food Pairing fundraising event March 6, 2014 at Ravenwood Golf Club in Victor, NY.  Silent auction items and raffles will also support this cause.
