Enjoying an outdoor public pool--especially doing a cannonball in the sunshine--is a right of passage for children in North America, and a vital component of urban planning in many cities. Calgary, Alberta, very nearly became the exception two years ago, when it proposed to fill in the last outdoor 14' dive tank in the city and build a wading pool instead.
The decision coincided with an historic flood in 2013, putting the future of the pool in the hands of a few committed pool supporters. Their enthusiasm has raised over $300,000 in grants and donations, to help offset the additional costs involved in updating the dive tank and boards.
A diving board and lane pool are an excellent capital investment. The same equipment can provide lessons, recreation and healthy living for every age and stage, and for decades. The current pool has been functional for 40 years, and we expect any updated facility to last 50.
