La Clase Mágica is raising funds to invite over 100 children and their families to UCSD for Mi Arte, Mi Voz (My Art, my Voice) on Saturday, May 10, 2014. Mi Arte, Mi Voz (MAMV) is a dynamic out-of-school experiential learning project that aims to help K-6th children gain a sense of empowerment through their own creative projects. This new curriculum project supplements the 25-year-old after-school program, La Clase Mágica, which primarily prepares bilingual children with literacy and life skills for future learning success. MAMV utilizes multiple artistic mediums such as creative writing, filmmaking, and graphic and visual arts to help children express their identities, pride in their communities, and the positive impacts they believe they can make upon the world.Children at UC San Diego's Price Center during last year's MAMV
In La Clase Mágica, from October through June, participating children collaborate with community college and university mentors in weekly after-school environments in four locations across San Diego County. The undergraduates are trained in practicum courses at UCSD and Palomar College, and act as mentors and guides in the creative learning process of MAMV. This year, the participating children are working on activities geared towards empowering their voice. Each quarter, the children share, collaborate, and create stories. The children are also encouraged to share and discuss 21st Century opportunities like future career paths, dreams and goals, as well as civic engagement. With the new sense of empowerment and thinking about certain issues, children begin to brainstorm ways to make a difference in their schools, communities, and world. They then create an artistic project that addresses their relevant issue ranging from book-making to digital photography to theater arts to an endless array of artistic mediums. Throughout their creative process, their college-aged mentors guide the children, helping them to reflect upon the larger age-appropriate skills. These skills include cognitive, academic, and social skills which they are honing as they create, such as communication and collaborative competencies.
LCM Children at workshopsOutcome:

  • Center for Academic and Social Advancement (CASA), a community non-profit which supports La Clase Mágica, believes that the Mi Arte, Mi Voz project at LCM creates an optimum learning environment for community action, civic leadership, and cultural competency.
  • This project aims to not only provide an artistic outlet for children to share their personal voices about pertinent issues, but to also incite change in the community by giving these children and undergraduates a unique space to discover equities and collaborate together to find solutions.
  • In a past study, 75% of participants interviewed declared LCM boosted their self-esteem in academic and professional settings

CASA is seeking community support to expand this new curriculum project and provide

  • A Local Artist-In-Residency who will observe their progress and provide encouragement, guidance, and constructive feedback on the children’s work (two times per quarter at each site)
  • The development of reflection activities that encourage the children to examine the larger age-appropriated cognitive, academic, and social skills they are honing as they create, such as communication and collaborative competencies.
  • The digital tools to give technological dimensions to the art projects and allow children to gain critical technology skills like sharing files via our voicethread classroom, and engaging with educational apps.
  • A year end fieldtrip and symposium event at UCSD, where children will share their yearlong projects with a wider audience, engage in cross-site exchange activities, and participate on a tour of the college campus.
