Before I Die is a global art project that invites people to reflect on their lives and share their personal aspirations in public space.

The wall will be located on the side of the building at 1605 Monroe Ave, Memphis, TN.

Since the building is historic we will need to install wood along the wall and paint it with chalkbord paint.  We will then attach rails and keep an endless supply of chalk for people to use.

The wall will be installed and opened on November 5, 2013.

The original project was started by Candy Chang on an abandoned house in New Orleans after she lost someone she loved.
When Candy painted the side of an abandoned house in her New Orleans neighborhood with chalkboard paint and stenciled the words, “Before I die I want to ____” after she lost someone she loved, she never expected it to become a worldwide phenomenon. Thanks to passionate people around the world who have spearheaded their own walls, there are now over 375 Before I Die walls in over 25 languages and over 60 countries, including Kazakhstan, Portugal, Japan, Kenya, Iraq, Argentina, and South Africa. They have been a constant source of inspiration and therapy for Candy and she has been working hard on a book to celebrate many of these walls. The Before I Die book will be published by St. Martin’s Press and come out November 5, 2013. Filled with our hopes, fears, humor, and heartbreak, it’s a reminder of our shared connections and a chance to contemplate life’s ultimate question. 304 pages long, the colorful hardcover book features the story of the first wall, walls around the world, personal stories from organizers and people who have written on a wall, insights into our aspirations from city to city and as a whole, and much more.
