Limerick Animal welfare hasn't added a story.
Poor lab found in limerick - under vet and LAW care. This wound is worse in real life as the flesh has started to decay and is already infected. He is going to need some very intensive care over the next few days if he is to survive. He is on huge doses of pain killers and antibiotics and will need very specialist dressings over the next few days to remove all the dead and necrotic material.
UPDATE TODAY 5TH JUNE FROM VET
Wound has been cleaned and the first stage dressing has been applied.
He is much happier now that the painkillers have kicked in and the
wound has been covered and hydrated.
Next couple of days will be
critical but he is responding well totreatment so far. There are no
shortcuts like amputation that will work as there would be no clean
skin to cover the stump. The wound will have to be cleaned up over the
next few days using dressings before we can attempt to try to close it
. His leg is not broken and he has full use of it. If he had been
brought in when the injury occurred it would have just been a routine
stitchup op but this has been open for 3-4 days at least maybe a week
or more and had gotten into a terrible state due to the exposure of
the wound to dust and dirt. I was shocked when I first saw him and it
takes a lot to shock me at this stage of my career with the size and
depth of the wound ( that is a 20cm x15cm dressing and is attached to
the edges of the wound) , the putryfying stench that was coming from
it and the obvious agony that the poor dog was in.
Hopefully he
will be much better tomorrow and the dressings and antibiotics will
have the infection much reduced.
UPDATE 7TH jUNE 2014
Charley is in good form today eating well and wound is looking good infection is gone. Last wet to dry bandage done today Saturday : will start the long and complicated road to closing this wound. It is a daunting task and will involve several operations. The wound is in nearly the worst place it could be in as bandages will have to be applied to any grafts and it is a very technically difficult place to get them to stick. He is too clean and wont soil in his kennel but wont walk on a lead either so I have had to carry him everywhere
25th JUNE 2014....Charlie is doing great, wound is healing well and the vet is very pleased with his progress. John has done a fantastic job.
