Brashier MCNC Ambassadors hasn't added a story.
Get Up, Stand Up: One Group of High School Students Blazing a Path Against Bullying Through Theatrics.
Our Project
Our project has been to design, write, advertise and produce a play based on the topic of Social Justice/Injustice. For our social injustice we choose a theme in which we have all experienced in our life; bullying. Whether we have been bullied or have been the bully, our play tells the story through our students eyes from elementary to high school.
Who are we?
We are a high school leadership and student initiative group at Brashier Middle College Charter High School in Simpsonville, South Carolina. We are one of the many groups within a program called the MCNC (Middle College National Consortium) Student Initiative program.
What is an Ambassador?
We are a group of high school students participating in a national leadership organization called MCNC that embraces a new mission and theme each year. (This year's theme is Social Justice/Injustice.) And we work very hard all year long (We're talking about 80 hours a year or more from the beginning of the summer into the school year until about mid-April. Many countless hours each week are spent as we approach the last month before the conference especially). While other students are hanging out, texting and tweeting, we are working passionately on our project!
Our project consists of identifying bullying and all it’s entailing issues within our local and national community through a homegrown play called Get Up, Stand Up.
RESEARCH
We began "researching" bullying through interviewing one another within the group and then outside of our group to get an idea on the local impact of bullying and the common types and the ages they occur at.
After these experiences, we set out to pick the themes for the three acts of our play: elementary school-Insecurity, middle school-acceptance, and high school-pressure.
PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER
Two of our veteran members and high school seniors, Brittany Gilliland (Writer and Advertising Manager) and Austin Watters (Producer and Director) took on the play as their senior projects. As a part of the group, they are working to make the play the best it can be and we are the support team. They took the research done by the group and research they've done themselves and, from August all the up until now, have written, cast and are currently working to advertise and produce the play BUT we need funding!
PRESENT
We are rehearsing, developing sets and advertising/PSA campaigns for our our stage production that will debut April 12th. Our hope is to not only create awareness to the issue of bullying but to leave our audiences with a sense of connection and empathy to make changes in our community. We will then be presenting our play and overall project at the annual student leadership (MCNC) conference in Baltimore in late April.
But WE NEED HELP! The cost of putting on a (good) show is a lot of work and a lot of money! We will be needing to pay for advertising, location, set, costumes/clothing and lighting and/or soundboard personnel. Without money we really have no show and that’s why we need YOU!
OUR GOAL
To raise funds to fully advertise, run the play and if we raise enough money, to send 8 students to present our project at the MCNC Student Leadership conference in Baltimore, Maryland!
Bare Minimum Goal: $1,500.
Middle of the Road Goal: $2,500
Blowing it Out of the Water Goal: $4,000
Please help us carry out this play OR forwarding this on to someone who you think will! Get up and stand up against bullying and help us do the same!
