Anthony is my great nephew, and he just turned 2 years of age January 10th 2014.

Anthony was born with a CHD called Tetralogy of fallot with Pulmonary artresia, stenosis and Mapca's. Tetralogy of Fallot is a rare (0.07 case per 1000 live births) and complicated series of heart defects with 4 main issues. 1. Over riding Aorta. His Aorta is placed directly over both lower sections of his heart, and takes in both oxygen rich blood AND blue blood that is meant to go to the lungs to receive oxygen. Thus sending poorly oxygenated blood throughout his body. 2. Complete VSD (Ventricular Septal Defect) he is missing the entire wall between his bottom 2 heart chambers. 3. Pulmonary Stenosis

(A narrowing of the right ventricular outflow tract ) Anthony had his original Pulmonary artery removed along with the valve at 3.5 months old, it was replaced by a gortex conduit with no valve. 4.Right Ventricular Hypertrophy. ( Unusually muscular right ventricle, due to the heart having to work harder). Anthony also has: Pulmonary artresia: malformation of the pulmonary valve. ( His was removed) Mapca's: ( Major Aortopulmonary Collaterals) When there is severe stenosis (blockage), or atresia (absence) of the pulmonary

arterial trunk and there is little or no blood flow to the lungs, then the body must someway find a way to perfuse the lungs . As a result, the body develops arterial collaterals that branch out from the aorta and integrate themselves with the pulmonary circulation (bronchopulmonary plexus) in order to perfuse the lungs with an adequate blood supply.

Pulmonary atresia with VSD and MAPCA's is considered the extreme end of the anatomic spectrum of tetralogy of Fallot. Anthony has had 4 open heart surgeries and one Catheterization surgery and is due for his 5th open heart surgery on February 24th, 2014.

Facts about open heart surgery: -Each time he has Open Heart Surgery he is placed on the heart lung bypass machine and given 2-4 blood transfusions. -He has his sternum broken to gain access to his heart and it is put back together with 4 steel sutures. -This upcoming surgery is so risky with the amount of scar tissue and the fact that his sternum had healed in an outward V shape that he will have to be placed on the Bypass machine through a major artery in his neck, rather than his heart. They have to hook him up before they can start in case the scar tissue has adhered to his heart. - His vaccinations have been delayed each time he gets surgery and he is now 1 full year behind.

Anthony is a loving little boy who brings smiles to all around him with his bright smile and attitude that lights up a room. His mum and dad, Charity and James, love him so deeply and struggle financially each time Anthony needs to have these intense surgeries. I would like to help them by relieving at least just a little of the added stress put onto them financially, so they and Anthony are able to concentrate on healing. I am asking for your help in doing so...no donation is too small!
