Thanks to a animal control officer who rescued her, a very sweet Pit Bull named "Abby" arrived with her head badly wounded and infected. In fact, Abby’s body tells a story of trauma and pain.

"Deep infected wounds, part of her bone showing , an eye injury and old and new scars all over her body. These are just the things we can see.

Normally a dog in Abby's condition would be humanely euthanized at the shelter, but American Association of Carolina's rescue refused to not let that happen. "We’re full, no fosters and overextended, but no way were we walking away from this girl,"  says rescue.

This rescue works with a network of fosters, volunteers and trainers. Has developed a good rapport with the local community, so if there is a dog like Abby, they get notified.

She was taken immediately to a vet, where she currently remains under observation & treatment. A real trooper.

Abby's history remains a mystery, although her vets  suspect she was involved in dog fighting, most likely as a bait dog. Although no one knows how long Abby has been living a life of torture, we know now she will never have to live that life again.

Abby is fighting off a very serious infection from her open wounds and is currently being treated with strong antibiotics. "She's a hot mess."  "We need help with this girl - lots of help."

Abby's vets are now waiting for the results of Abby's blood work to see if there are other issues aside from the infection going on internally.

Although it is hard to say how long her emotional recovery will take, we know that she can be rehabilitated. She would approach us, but flinched at being petted. "She's clearly not used to a human being nice to her." This poor girl will need formal dog training to help her begin her new journey in life.  "Her new life starts right this minute. The best is yet to come Abby."
