Giles County Humane Association hasn't added a story.
The combination of symptoms were unusual, and the Giles County Animal Hospital worked to rule out as many disease processes as quickly as possible. Her initial treatment plan included several oral medications such as doxycycline for possible tick borne disease, prednisone and clindamycin for disease processes affecting the spine. Baby Love was also taken to a surgical specialist for evaluation prior to treatment. The surgeon hypothesized based on a neurologic evaluation, that if Baby Love did not respond to oral therapy, that her injury had most likely occurred in her cervical spine, or neck. This type of injury would prevent messages from her brain from reaching her legs and vice-versa.
After a full month of oral medications and no improvement in her ability to walk, Baby Love’s road to recovery was looking grim. However, the staff at Giles County Animal Hospital did not lose faith! At every “potty break” the kennel staff, techs and doctors took turns encouraging Baby Love to stand with however much support she needed. Baby Love was then praised for any small improvements and efforts with treats and love. She progressed from very little movement, to an army crawl and then to a sitting position.
After 2 months of physical and mental therapy, and one attempt at a wheelchair for balance, Baby Love has built up her confidence and her ability to walk! Although her gait is a bit wobbly and stilted, she continues to improve daily. She recently conquered her fear of stepping over the lip at the front of her cage and now stands proudly within her cage for a well deserved treat!
Baby Love is no longer on any medications. Her daily “therapy” sessions last about 15 minutes and occur 2-3 times daily. The sessions simply require lots of love and encouragement. We hope to add some more socialization to her daily routine with other dogs in the near future and look to get her spayed soon. Our ultimate goal is to find her a well deserving family and get her adopted! Her treatment costs are close to $800 so far, although she is certainly worth every penny. The Giles County Humane Association has made this possible and they deserve any financial support available. They work solely on donations and a great love for animals.
Baby Love has inspired each of us and taught us more then we could have ever expected. Her future looks bright, happy and healthy as she continues to take her Baby Steps to recovery!
