Can you imagine what it is like to hear the words “five to seven years to live” when a doctor is talking about YOU… In early 2010 – that is exactly what the pulmonologist told me – when I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Langerhans'-Cell Histiocytosis -- which is a relatively rare and incurable interstitial lung disease in adults. The only hope for me now - I would need a bilateral transplant - a Double Lung Transplant – to have any chance at seeing my daughters grow into women and growing old with the love of my life, United States Air Force Technical Sergeant Benjamin Kuper. Now that I have finally made that precious list – I face another hurdle … This time financial. According to recent estimates – the cost for me to undergo this life-saving operation – is astronomically out of reach on our military paycheck. But – can one really put a price tag on life… While we are fortunate enough to have insurance, our assignment to Dyess Air Force Base – in Abilene, Texas – means we have to drive roughly 200 miles each way from Abilene to Baylor Medical Center – in Dallas, Texas – for appointments, testing, treatments, and eventually – the transplant itself. This also means that my extended recovery will have to be in the Dallas area – so that I am close enough to Baylor in the event I have any kind of complications. Along with the transportation costs and any uncovered medical expenses, my family also faces the extra cost of providing care for myself during the long and arduous recovery process, and someone to care for my children in my place. My family and I ~ we sincerely appreciate any donation that you can make in support of our struggle – or better yet – our battle as we fight this disease. Though we face months of treatments and follow-up care – along with a dedicated rehabilitation regime – we keep strong in our faith – and in the faith that we can rely on the kindness and generosity of those in our community. Thank you.
