Rachel Griffin hasn't added a story.
My name is Rachel Griffin, I'm a 21 year old children's nursing student about to graduate from university. Last year I spent 4 months nursing in Pokhara, Nepal, where I met some of the kindest people I have ever met, and made so many lifelong friends.
During my time there I volunteered with a local non-governmental organization, registered in Government of Nepal, Social Welfare Council & District Administrative Office, Kaski. Community Support Group, who has been implementing different projects to support the surrounding community with partnership of multiple donor agencies i.e. Save The Children, United Nation On Drug & Crime, UKAID through DFID, Help Age International, Action Aid, United Nation Development Program. .Community Support Group has been supporting People Living with HIV/AIDS, Children Affected by AIDs and raising awareness of HIV, supporting female injecting drug users in their recovery, preventing them from Blood Transmitted Diseases and disaster resilience, management through different projects.
On 25th April 2015, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Nepal, causing a devastating amount of damage across the country. This was then followed by a 7.3 magnitude earthquake on 12th May 2015. The earthquake in Nepal on April 25 has killed thousands of people and injured thousands more, destroyed hundreds of homes and buildings, and left thousands in need of help. According to The United Nations reports, an estimated eight million people have been impacted by the earthquake in Nepal and more than 1.4 million people are in need of food assistance. The world is shocked and saddened by this tragedy. Heroic efforts are continuing on all fronts to re-establish transportation and communication links with the hardest hit areas, to rescue more victims buried under the rubble, to care for the injured, and to tend to the deceased & managing shelters.
Heartbroken for the country that inspired me in so many ways, I got in touch with my friends there as soon as I could to see if there was any way I could help them.
Manish, my friend and mine contact for Community Support Group, explained how they had turned their focus on earthquake relief and planned on helping the surrounding rural villages. The team of Community Support Group including Manish recently visited rural villages within the epicenter of the earthquake i.e. Gurkha, to support the affected families. Community Support Group was able to help the needy by giving away Rs. 7500 to 1617 people each in cash. He highlighted to me that there was a need for more funding in order to support their work in the villages. He spoke about the main purpose of their aid: to build temporary shelter, toilets and learning centers as well as distribute food & other essential items to the earthquake victims.
The need for temporary shelter and toilets could be more crucial in the rural villages of Nepal, especially as this is Monsoon season. Also, with illness such as diarrhea, cholera, Hepatitis A and typhoid being a major risk in Nepal, the need for sanitary conditions is of upmost importance and providing substantial toilets is a fundamental prevention for spread of illness. A lot of the local schools were destroyed in the earthquake, so learning development centers will enable children to continue receiving an education during these hard times, enabling them to play together with provided toys to restore their childhood and bring normality to their lives at this tragic time.
I will personally be sending the funds to my friend Manish to use in the disaster relief, to ensure the funds are going directly to the cause.
Please help by generously donating and sharing this cause on social media.
Nepal has a special place in my heart and my time there changed me as a person. The people of Nepal could not have been more warm and welcoming, and to have this happen to them is utterly heart-breaking. It would mean so much to me if you would help towards this project as any help will go such a long way in making people's lives better.
