James Holzapfel is 11 years old, he was born with Spina Bifida Myelomeningocele (this is the most severe). He is wheelchair bound and has never been able to walk. I have been able to pick him up and load him into a vehicle and his wheelchair would fold until recently. I have been ill and can't hardly lift him.  James has undergone 22 operations in his life time, and doctors have discussed the removal of the right kidney, but the left kidney is not doing good and doctors are afraid that it is going bad too.

In 2010 we had been informed that James was having kidney complications. In 2012 we traveled to Austin Texas to Dell Children’s Hospital and had a procedure called a Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy where over 100 kidney stones was removed from his right kidney. James’ body did not take to this surgery very well and he was in ICU for a week. December of 2012 we moved back home to Alabama. In February 2013 James got very ill and was diagnosed with a UTI only to find out that his Shunt had malfunctioned and he had to undergo a complete replacement. He was sent home and was placed on antibiotics several times over the next few months for UTI’s. James started passing blood on August 18th and was hospitalized with a severe kidney infection. He spent 5 days in the hospital then he was sent home on antibiotics. James has lost 20lbs and is refusing to eat or drink much of anything so we made another doctor’s appointment and found that his infection has not gone away and that the blood is still in the urine. Doctor said we will administer antibiotics at home and pray that the kidneys do not go into full renal failure. James has been admitted 9 times since august 2013 due to infection either in the kidneys or bed sores getting infected. James right leg started swelling and his ankle was the size of a grapefruit, so I brought him back to the ER. They admitted James back into USA Woman's and Children's on February 19,2014 and resident doctors have started James back on antibiotics for cellulitis.
