NIKO HASKUS is at the top of his game as a Montreal playwright, director and producer. His life begins to unravel when his girlfriend and lead actress dies of a heroin overdose. He makes a spiritual journey to the country of his birth, Greece, where he meets and falls in love with a woman 18 years older than he is. Together they discover a connection to their Greek mythological past.
Strange Days at the Larissiacron Summary
To all appearances, Niko Haskus is a successful Montreal playwright and theatre director. But inside he is losing his grip on his identity. To make matters worse his girlfriend, who is also his leading lady, is threatening to derail his latest production with her erratic behavior. When inevitable tragedy follows, Niko is consumed with sadness and guilt, and flees to Greece – the country of his birth – in search of answers and the hope of a new beginning.
In Athens, he begins to piece his life together. We learn that he was an orphan, and his quest to find out where he came from is not merely spiritual but material. A worldly preacher whom Niko befriends in a bar seems to offer him clues to his destiny both as a writer and as a human being: “These are strange times we live in. our mythologies become our realities and our realities become our mythologies.” Niko also finds himself attracted to a beautiful Athenian woman who owns the Larissiacron Hotel – a place that seems to draw to it the lost, the curious and the adventurous from all over the world.
Weaving a tale from Montreal’s frozen metropolis to Athens’ sun-scorched Acropolis, and blending ancient myths with parables for the modern age, Strange Days at the Larissiacron Hotel is the story of a man who must put together the often tragic pieces of a puzzle in order to find redemption. It is a drama that demands of its protagonist, “When do you stop being Niko the director… and become just a man?”
