First Name Last Name hasn't added a story.
The Story:
Almost three years on, their are still victims of typhoon Haiyan
(2013) that are still living in temporary shelters. A good example
of this are the small communities of Igsaug and Curva in Bogo, Cebu,
Philippines. They are still using tarps and patched up iron sheets
as their homes. They did receive some aid to rebuild their houses
however because most of the time it would not be enough to be able
to rebuild, the cash aid gets spent to more immediate needs. The
project of the Daughters of Wisdom of approached rebuilding their
community differently. Instead of giving them cash, the community is
provided with construction materials and as a community will help
everyone in building each and every home. This concept of
"Bayanihan" (tagalog for community cooperation) or
"Pagtambayayong" in Cebauno had been Filipino value and
been proved to be successful.
However, the last batch had been suspended the project, as it is still important to pursue it we have decided to pick up the work. This fund raising is intended to rebuild 35 houses, repair of 11 houses, and for 5 to 6 months for labor costs for the carpenter/s. If we can raise more than the target, we intend to start a small community farm.
Bayanihan: Community Building Story in Igsaug
Vicente "Inteng" Sarsalejo is the de facto community
leader in Igsaug. Because of his courage to approach the sisters of
Daughter of Wisdom to seek help, many of his community had become a
recipient of rebuilding their homes. He is a sweet corn cake vendor in
Hagnaya Port, which is around 20 kilometers away from his home, and a
father of 7 children, raising them with his wife, Rose. While the
sisters was trying to board a ship to a project site in Bantayan
Island, Inteng approached them in the hope that the sister would be
able to visit their community and be able to help them rebuild. After
months of waiting as the project in Bantayan finished, the sisters did
visit Igsaug, to survey and start the project.
Today, their are more than 200 families that had been helped rebuild their homes in various towns. In Bogo, there had been more than 30 families helped, and in every phase Inteng and Rose have assisted the community from identifying which families are still needing help, to organizing the community to accomplish their goal. The project success is greatly dependent on the community cooperation and the couple had been instrumental to have the community come together. With our last visit, Rose mentioned that the community have organized to help a widow with seven children to rebuild her home which was nearly a kilometer away from their community. The widow was first hesitant because she didn't have the money to pay them but they insisted that it was their way of helping her and they would not be asking anything in return.
Who we are:
We would like to continue the project in rebuilding houses
for the victims of typhoon Haiyan in northern Cebu, Philippines.
The project was started by Daughters of Wisdom (a Catholic
organization of nuns) in partnership of Bayahinhan Foundation (a
community based organization from Britanny, France) and they
have successfully rebuilt houses in 6 communities in 4 towns.
The community in Igsaug and Curva Bogo, Cebu had been surveyed
by the sisters already however the project was suspended as they
have to focus back on their primary missions in running a school
for the indigent children, feeding programs, running a community
clinic among others. With this, we are picking up the work. We
will help facilitate in rebuilding benificiaries homes and
partner with the community in rebuilding their own community.
Greg Bentain had been working in doing follow ups in the previous project sites. He invited me to join and help to raise funds for the community in Nailon, Bogo. Should this campaign will be sucessful, our participation on this project will be to coordination of the community to ensure they participate in rebuilding the houses, facilitate the delivery of the construction materials per phase and proper accounting for the expenses for transparency.
The Project
The project is now on it's phase 3 in Igsaug and this time it be
run by us, volunteers. We have identified 35 families where we are
targeting to build houses and 11 for repair. The houses to be built
are a modest 10x14 ft for them to be able to have a head start. We
will be hiring a carpenter and the community will send some people
to help build their own homes. The houses will be built together by
group, and the construction materials will be provided for each
phase. The delivery of the construction materials will be dependent
if the phase had been completed to all houses. This method of proven
to drive the community to fast track as it would be in their own
interest to do so. The we intend to rebuild 35 houses, repair 11
houses and hire 1 or 2 carpenter/s. And for that we would like to
raise USD 28,000 or PHP 1.3 million for the project.
