George Calderon hasn't added a story.
After graduating high school back in 1990, I joined the Navy soon after turning 18. At the time, my little sister was 12. After 11 years of service in Virginia, I decided to stay the East Coast for another 11 years. During that time, my sister, 25, began feeling ill and was diagnosed with multiple diseases including Lupus. She slowly started deteriorating and had to move back in with our parents where my mother began taking care of her. My sister eventually lost her ability to walk and became bed ridden. Her kidneys failed and she started dialysis three times a week.
In order to help my mother with my sister, I made the difficult decision to move back home on August 1st, 2012, leaving a good job and my two kids with my ex. Soon after my arrival. my mother went to the doctor and was herself diagnosed with a disease...breast cancer. A few weeks later, she had a mastectomy. The timing of my homecoming couldn't have been any better. At the time, I thought it couldn't have been a coincidence. I still didn't have a job and I could take over taking care of my sister while my mom got better. I felt that was the reason why I was called to come home.
I took on most of my mother's duties including taking my sister wherever she needed to go and I didn't mind at all. I was just happy being able to spend time with her. Then on January 2, 2013, my sister was admitted to the hospital. She had complications and an infection she couldn't beat. We took her home Jan 10th. She left us Jan 11 @ 12:13pm. It was then that I realized the true reason why I was called home...to help my mother cope with the loss.
The reason I am asking for help is because we are not at all a wealthy family. And because my sister couldn't get life insurance due to her health, she passed away being unable to financially help us once she was gone. Fortunately, we gathered enough money to bury her, but had nothing left for her headstone. I really wish I could tell you more about the person she was, but I can't. I was gone for so long, I barely knew her. Now I feel guilty...I thought I would have more time with her... She is survived by her two beautiful daughters and loving friends and family that miss her every day.
