Hi everyone!

My name is Iman / Sudaneeya & I am a part-time multidisciplinary creative based in Toronto. I am raising funds for my debut solo photography exhibit titled ELEMENTS , which explores & celebrates the unique identities of individuals/communities across the Afro-Caribbean diaspora. ELEMENTS is scheduled for the end of August at It's OK* Studios. This project has been four years in the making, and it has been difficult to secure funding as an immigrant who recently gained permanent residency status in Canada. 

With that said, I am hoping to raise $2,500 CAD to cover all the logistical costs of the exhibit (prioritized in the order listed below): 

  • Printing costs (at least $1,000 CAD)
  • Labour & transportation costs 
  • Talent - guest DJs & performers (if funds allow)
  • Food & refreshments for the opening & closing reception 
  • Studio fees (paying for It’s OK* gallery rental)

** I am also accepting family objects/artifacts from home (i.e. frames, decor, etc) to help design the space — please reach out at imanabbaro@gmail.com or via Instagram DMs @sudaneeyaa to coordinate drop-off of loaned or donated objects.

This project is very dear to my heart as it is a love letter to my community. This fundraiser will help make this exhibit possible & free for everyone to enjoy. You can read about the project below:

"ELEMENTS is a film-photography series that explores, and celebrates the unique identities across the Afro-Caribbean diaspora. This three-year long project was a response of the traumatizing portrayal of our communities during the 2020 resurgence of the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement.

This exhibit highlights eighteen individuals I photographed on film between July 2020 - November 2023. Each individual shoot was curated based on concepts, places or physical objects that tied the individual to their unique identity. Throughout the series, I wanted to capture each subject in their most authentic state. I wanted to capture the people from my community in their element , to remind ourselves and each other that we are more than our publicized trauma".
